Job Description of Nursing Informatics

Nursing Informatics is essentially a liaison between the medical and nursing staff and technology. Some of the daily tasks will include policy writing, system maintenance and optimizing, choosing the proper system for the facility, provide systems training and education for the medical staff. The Informatics Nurse may also be required to design the actual system, test it, and train staff and patients on its usage.

Informatics is necessary in all areas of healthcare which creates a large base of positions available. Public health, primary care, intensive care, and areas which are lacking in medical resources all provide a wealth of opportunity for the qualified Informatics Nurse.

Salary and Job Outlook for Nursing Informatics

As with most nursing jobs, salary is subject to change due to a variety of factors such as geographical location and industry, along with the actual scope of the position. The average salary reported was $100,717 annually with the median being $93,000 per year. This field is expected to get increasingly more competitive.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that positions as computer systems analysts, which is essentially the job of an Informatics Nurse, is expected to grow 21% over the next decade. This is due to the fact that organizations, including the healthcare industry, will be increasing their reliance on technology.
