Since some schools offering online medical billing programs do allow you to “complete at your own pace”, it is theoretically possible to complete one in 4 to 8 weeks. More realistically, your online medical billing and coding certificate program will take at least 10 weeks to a few months to finish. You could go on to earn a diploma in about a year or an associate’s degree in about 2 years, if you choose.

Certification is generally not required to be a medical biller. However, getting certified is highly recommended because most healthcare facilities prefer their billers and coders to be certified. The prerequisite for getting your education in medical billing and coding is a high school diploma or GED.

Online medical billing or coding courses include classes like:

  • Medical terminology
  • Medical codes
  • Procedure and supply

You’ll also learn about laws such as the HIPAA, Affordable Care Act, Fair Debt Collection Act, and the False Claims Act.
