Since some schools offering medical billing courses do allow you to “complete at your own pace” online, it is theoretically possible to complete one in 4 to 8 weeks. More realistically, some colleges will allow you to train for your medical coding certificate online in about 10 weeks to a few months. You could go on to earn a diploma in about a year or an associate’s degree in about 2 years, if you choose. Find an online billing & coding program now.
Certification is generally not required to be a medical biller. However, getting certified is highly recommended because most healthcare facilities prefer their billers and coders to be certified. The prerequisite to getting the right education is a high school diploma or GED.
Online medical billing or coding courses include classes like:
- Medical terminology
- Medical codes
- Procedure and supply
You’ll also learn about laws such as the HIPAA, Affordable Care Act, Fair Debt Collection Act, and the False Claims Act.
